MASTERS TRIALS RESULTS:
Most of KZN’s top over 30yr old surfers arrived at Bay Beach on Saturday 20 March to surf in the KZN Surfing Trials. Three trials were held in the course of the morning of which top two results counted. These trials were run to determine the team who will represent KZN to surf against other provinces at the 2010 SA Champs which will be held at St Mikes (KZN South Coast) in the last week of May.
Conditions were clean with 2-3 ft head high waves. It was a windless morning for the duration of the contest with light onshore NE picking up later.
Stand out surfers of the day were Antonio Bortoletto in the Snrs (30+) division. Antonio got consistently high scores including an 8.5 ride in the first trial. Other surfers trying for the 2nd place in the team included Ryan Bisset, Hilton Lawrence, Manfred Adrio and Dean Leibbrandt. Ryan Bisset was successful and accumulated 1720 points to take the second position ahead of closest rival Hilton Lawrence who scored 1530 points.
In the Grandmasters (40+) it was Rob Moore-Boyle that got the judges attention and he won all his heats. Rob got the highest heat score of the day with an 8.5 and a 7.5 totaling 16 points out of a possible 20. It was a very tight call for the second place with Mark Wootton and Mike Kraus. Mark scored a total of 1730 with Mike getting 1720 – just 10 points dividing them.
Previous world champion Marc Wright was also in top form and won all his heats in the Kahunas (45+) division with high scoring rides including an 8.5. Murray Niven secured second place with a total of 1720 points ahead of Rob Bissett in third, Dave Hansen in 4th and Igal Stern in 5th.
Another multiple world champ and SA Champ surfer Chris Knutsen won both his trials in the Grand Kahunas (50+) division ahead of Rudy Palmboom Snr and Judge Oliver.
It was great to see the enthusiasm and competitive approach of the Masters and KZN looks to have a really good team for the 2010 SA Champs. The Masters (35+) division, and the open men and women trials will be run on Monday 5 April when the top KZN surfers are back from their international travels.
