With a field of over 80 contestants, Sunday saw the first Wave Wizards Surf Club contest of the year take place at Umhlanga’s Bronze Beach. In the spirit of Wave Wizards, contestants and supporters alike were treated to a day of good surfing, good vibes and general good times. Club sponsors Hurricane Surf Co and Hurley had the beach decked out with Gazebo’s and banners and while the day started off with a bit of wind and chilly weather, the surfing was red hot from the word go. With solid Cash prizes up for grabs in the premium open divisions courtesy of Carl’s Foods and Kulu swimwear as well as great product for the rest of the field, competitors were all going for gold.

The U/10 boys and girls showed courage and tenacity in the tough Umhlanga conditions with Ethan Kraus and Sophie Bell coming out tops. The U/14 boys division was dominated by Capetonian Ethan Fletcher who made the trip up to Durban especially for the event. Lenieka Botha took top honours in the junior girls from Teal Hogg while Umhloti’s Wade Simkiss edged out Daniel de Sousa in the U/18 boys. The open and masters divisions boasted a star studded line up of current and former S.A. surf stars. World Qualifying Series campaigner Tammy Lee Smith from Ballito surfed to victory in the Open ladies division ahead of the Bluff’s Heidi Palmboom. In the masters division it was former S.A. open champ Quinton Jones who took the win from the ever consistent Dean Leibbrandt. Rein Van De Wall and Carl Roux filled in the 3rd and 4th slots.

Fresh off a win in Cape Town at the W.P. Open, young Beyrick Devries finished on top again in the open division, forcing former national team surfer Craig Butcher into 2nd place. South Coast’s Hayden McNicol came 3rd while current S.A. U/20 champ Shawn Dennis had to settle for a credible 4th place.

The contest came to an end at 2pm after prizes from Hurricane, Hurley, Carls Foods, Butcher Boys, Kulu Swimwear, odyssey aqua, Just Desserts, Angelos and Public address were handed out to the various winners. The next contest will be held on the 9th of May and any queries can be forwarded to club chairman Jestyn Viljoen 0795003945 This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
