KZN U20 JUNIOR TRIALS HELD LAST WEEKEND.
The Kzn Jnr trials were held last weekend. On Saturday we ran the u17 boys, u13 boys, u20 & u17 girls and u13 girls. Trials took place at BAY beach in Durban, and while the weather was not great with intermittent downpours and drizzle, the waves proved to be a lot of fun with a good bowl.
On the advice of many parents and surfers we moved the trials to Bronze Beach in Umhlanga on Sunday to run the u20 boys, u15 boys, and u15 girls. Conditions were not perfect but the 2 to 4 ft waves were definitely contestable. Some surfers pulled off some radical tube rides and excellent aerials for the judges.

if there are any errors.
Many parents asked us to send scores of the various heats so we have done the attached form so surfers can see their scores and work on improving them at the next couple of trials. This was done manually so apologies if there are any errors – please mail me if so. I took the scores from the first judges sheet attached to the top tabulator sheets – please note that these scores may differ slightly from judge to judge.

Well done to the following surfers in particular who showed some fine form over the weekend:
Lenieka Botha in the u13 girls division got a 7 point ride in the first final. Cana Foster did really well and is lying tie first with Lenieka.
Caryn Macnicol from Scottburgh dominated the u15 girls division winning both trials.
Sarah Baum and Heidi Palmboom both got scores of 8.5 and 8 points respectively in the u17 girls division.
Little Shane Sykes from Salt Rock also dominated the u13 boys division with high scoring waves of 9.5 and 9s throughout the day. Keagan Wallace has shown huge improvement as well.
Josh Smit from Athlone Park won both the u15 boys trials and is also in fine form. Justin Sykes is lying 2nd on the log getting a high scoring wave of 7 points.
David Van Zyl was the top performer in the u17 boys division with regular high scoring waves throughout. In the first final he got an 8.5 with an 8 point ride.
Kane Bennewith also got an 8 point ride and Mikey Venter a 7 point ride.
Beyrick de Vries, Daniel de Sousa and Vaughn Weyer all scored rides of 9.5, 8.5 and 8.5 respectively with Shawn Dennis also getting a high score of 7 points.
Many thanks to all the parents who were there to help offload and load up the trailer at the beginning and end of trials. Thanks to the judges: Mark Maritz, Dave Dolton, Wade Botha, Tim Lubbe, Malcolm, Chris Leppan, and Contest Director Anne Wright and tabulator Annie de Vries.
Thanks also to Sharon for beach marshalling on Sat, and to Meryl de Sousa and Lynette Stander for their help on Sunday.
The trials went off well and Mark Maritz (head judge) and Anne Wright (contest director) would like to make a few notes for the next trial:
· Parents and surfers – please to stay away from the judges gazebo
· Surfers to please dry themselves before coming to get scores
· Surfers to put on their rash vests at the beach marshall, and keep them on until they have walked up the beach after their heat back to the beach marshall (not surf in with them around their neck – or take them off at the beach)
· Surfers are NOT to stand up after the siren has finished their heat. KZN will be imposing a R200 fine for this at the next trials.
Well done to ALL THE KIDS who took part. Please remember that if you did not get great results this event – don’t worry! We have put the scores up so that you can work on your surfing and improve your scores for the next two events.
The next trials will be held later in the year – probably May / June. Dates will be announced later in March.
Photos of trials will be posted on the web later in the week.
