LIZZARD SUMMER SURF SESSION ATTRACTS TOP SURFERS!

The Lizzard Summer Surf Session held last weekend at Bronze Beach in Umhlanga Rocks was a great success and attracted some of the province’s  and country’s most talented surfers.

The event falls part of the Umhlanga Vodacom December Carnival which is currently underway on Umhlanga’s main beach and in the village.

The two day contest started off on day one with excellent surf conditions.  3-4 ft clean glassy surf with a light NE wind produced a fun bowl wave and a good outside wave on the high tide.  On Sunday the day started off with a good 2 ft bowl wave and holiday makers were enjoying the morning’s sunny weather.  However mid morning a strong South Westerly attacked with a vengeance bringing rain and making the surfing conditions very tricky.  There was still good surfing to watch with a solid outside 3 ft wave but very bumpy.

Lizzard put up a prize purse of R5000 and Travis Logie – South Africa’s re-qualified WCT surfer was in striking form and showed why he is one of the greatest surfers in the world.  Travis  won the open men’s division, pocketing R2500 for the first place.  Chad du Toit came in second and Beyrick de Vries and Chris Leppan came tie third.  All surfers went home with a full wallet and good prizes from Hurricane, Lizzard and vouchers from the Box Bar and Grill in Umhlanga.

Travis said after the comp : “It was really awesome to surf a contest in Umhlanga and the waves were really fun.  The standard of surfing was really good with the country’s top surfers here so I was stoked to win.  The contest was so well run and was very well supported.  It was a nice way to finish off the year”.

Glenmore Superspar sponsored R5000 cash for the girls open division.  It was a very close final with Chantelle Rautenbach from Kommetjie and Tammy-Lee Smith from Salt Rock exchanging the lead throughout the heat.  Eventual winner Chantelle was treated to R2250 in prize money, Tammy-Lee came 2^nd, Heidi Palmboom in 3^rd and Kat Steffen in 4^th place.

The u18 boys division was won by Beyrick de Vries and the u18 girls by Heidi Palmboom.  Chris Frolich took top place in the u16 boys, and Wade Simkiss 1^st in the u14 boys division.  Chanelle Botha won the u14 girls and Gary Van Wierengen was the winner of the Masters division.  Wade Simkiss was voted Surfer of the Contest and is an up and coming surfer to look out for.
