BLOSSOM CANOLA FUN SURF SERIES ENDS IN STYLE
Mother nature could not have delivered weather more perfect for the final day of the Blossom Canola Fun Surf Event. After days/weeks of incessant rain in Durban, Sunday broke with blue skies and surfers and spectators had a fantastic fun day at the beach.
The waves were 2ft and great fun for the kids. There was a slight NE wind but it was a very hot summers day in Durban.
The Blossom Canola Fun Surf event has been held over the past three months with the final event taking place last weekend. Over 140 kids from age 7 to 18 took part and over 45 schools were represented.
At the final event stand out surfers included 8 year old Saxton Randall who scored an 8 point ride in the finals, and 15 year old Jess Wilson who scored a 9 point and a 7.5 ride in her semi final and went on to win the u16 girls division.
Special trophies were awarded to surfers and Vaughn Weyer from Richards Bay won the ‘Stand out Surfer’ of the event. Young Gaby Lailvaux took home the ‘Youngest surfer’ trophy. Justin Sykes from Ballito got the trophy for the ‘Highest wave score”. Atholton Primary School in Umhlanga won the ‘Most Surfers from one school” entered, and also got the trophy for the “Best Overall Results from a School”. Bev Hogg and Verna Foster won the 'best parents' awards for their amazing zumba dancing!
Winners of the series in each category were: Ethan Kraus (u10b) Umhlanga, Tyla Jade Banks (u10g) Uvongo, Richard Kidd (u12b) Ballito, Micaela Venter (u12g) Warner Beach, Justin Sykes (u14b) Ballito, Jade Mets (u14g) Umhlanga, Chad Coullie (u16b) A’Toti, Jess Wilson (u16g) La Lucia, Vaughn Weyer (u18b) Richards Bay, and Kat Steffen (u18g) Kloof.
Kids have been collecting Blossom Canola Margarine covers for months for the draw for a new surfboard. Lucky Annie de Vries won the prize and will be receiving a new surfboard from BILT surfboards.
Steven Gooding (Regional Manager for Blossom Canola) was there to award the children with their trophies and again he was thrilled with the event saying “I am really impressed with the surfing I have seen, and our brand goes well with surfing as it is all about health and fitness”.
