BLOSSOM CANOLA HAS GREAT SURF
The second Blossom Canola Fun Surf Event was held at Bay of Plenty on 22 November 2009. The day started off with gusting and very strong offshore winds which settled down later on. Gazebos were flying, and surfers and spectators got sand for breakfast!
The waves were really good for the surfers with a 2-3 foot swell and some good barrels coming off the Bay Pier.
Many of the Moms and Dads got some serious sun tanning in when the wind did die down.
There were three podiums all run separately which made the contest go very smoothly. At the middle podium we had Head Judge Wade Botha with Joe, Kyle, Chris Leppan all helping. Victor was the beach marshal and Annie de Vries the tabulator.
Anne Wright was the Contest Director. At the right hand podium – head judge Mark Maritz worked with Cyril, Malcolm and Fortune. Mark’s lovely wife Elani did the tabulating and Kevin Rodgers the beach marshaling.
On the left hand Podium – Dave Dolton was chief with Dustin, Cruzie and Landon helping him. Belinda Kruger was tabulator and Nikita Kekana beach marshall.
Thanks to all of you above – for a great event – all your podiums ran like clockwork!
Tim Hordyk – our equipment manager – Tim you are AMAZING!!! Thank you SO MUCH for all you do for KZN Surfing! Always with a smile – fetching and carrying the gazebos – always the last to pack up etc – HUGE GRATITUDE from all of us! Also to Victor and his friend for doing all the branding and equipment.
Lynette Stander was excellent as usual with her vivacious smile – doing all the t-shirts and handing out of all the goodies. Also to Rory and Tyler and Damien Stander – for helping carry and cart things around! Tyler (muscle man) Stander J
Thanks to Mentos for their giveaways – and to Clover for the milkshakes! Also special thanks to LIZZARD for donating all the prizes for the event.
Igal Stern was our ‘WATER BOUNCER’ – he had his work cut out for him and battled to keep the free surfers out the water – but he tried hard – thanks Igal!!!
We were delighted when Steven Gooding from Blossom Canola arrived and helped with the prize giving! He was very happy with the day’s proceedings and said “It is great to see all these kids enjoying the outdoors. Surfing is an excellent sport for youngsters as it keeps them fit and healthy – exactly what our company endorses”
Steven – it was great to have you there – hopefully we will see more of you at the events!
The event started at 7am with Mark Maritz addressing all the 125 odd kids and parents with regards the criteria and rules about rashies etc. Then we started at 7:30 sharp. The day was over by 12:15 which is perfect as a lot of the little ones get tired. (as do the big ones!) Nothing like that Sunday afternoon nap after a bit of sun and sea….
Stand out surfers on the day were Justin Sykes who got the highest wave score of the day – a 9.5! and backed it up with a 7. ride. Richard Kidd from Ballito also ripped – getting an 8 point ride in the final. Jess Wilson in theu16 girls division pulled off a 7. ride and Vaughn Weyer from Richards Bay got an 8 and a 6 in his final.
Well done to all surfers! Many thanks to all the parents who helped as well – especially everyone who helped batton down the gazebos when the gale force winds hit us early in the morning! Thanks parents for supporting your kids in the surfing!
Next event is 5/6 December. We will be running normal REPO rounds over TWO DAYS – not % rounds. All welcome to enter – even kids who have not entered 1st two events. More info on the final event at a later stage….
