St Mikes hosts another great Lizzard Tag Series event

Over 50 young surfers competed in the third and final event of the Lizzard Tag Series for 2009 which was held in typical summer conditions at St Mikes Beach on the KZN South Coast, Sunday (November 1). A fun shore break made the event contestable which ensured that teams finished well before their allocated times.

Celebrating its third year, the popular Lizzard Tag Series involves girls and boys from as young as seven to 16 competing in teams of five surfers each. The contest is exclusively a team event and each heat is forty five minutes long. A specialized Surfing South Africa relay format is used to determine the results.

As has become tradition in the series, each group is able to choose their own unique team name. With honour at stake as well as R4 250 in cash on offer to the members of the final four teams, competition was fierce from round one.

After a full day of surfing in front of an enthusiastic crowd honours went the way of Scooping Turtles, made up of Heather Klug, David Gouws, Sabelo Reed, Zumani Gcwensa and Sabelo Shabani.

Second were the Crazy Chicken Heads, comprising Brandon Rose, Brett Payn, Sibisuso Duma and Simo Mkhize while the team of Chanelle Botha, Jazz Jacobs, Justin Rodgers, Byran Wigmore and Blade Bauchop, known as the Ripping Racoons, came third.

The Lizzard Tag Series at St Mikes was hosted by Southern KZN Surfing Association and all the events are sanctioned by Surfing South Africa.

Surfing South Africa is the governing body for surfing in South Africa and is recognized by Sport and Recreation SA, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee. SSA is a founder member of the International Surfing Association, the governing body for World Surfing.
