FATHERS DAY SURF COMP GREAT SUCCESS!
Over 30 pairs of Fathers and Dads/Lads took part in the Dads & Lads/Daughters surfing comp held at Dairy on fathers day 21 June 2009. We have had really good feed back via emails and phone calls so this could be the start of an annual event! The Dads were all given Fathers Day goodie bags with Chocs and other interesting things.
The weather was beautiful with temperatures reaching around 24 deg, and the surf was perfect for both the older and younger surfers. There was no wind for most of the day then a slight East wind picked up but did not affect the surf or spectators on the beach. The afternoon pushing tide created fun 3ft bowl waves for the surfers which helped those that had made the finals.
Again thanks to our sponsors Ocean Minded for their prizes (shoes, stickers, t-shirts etc) and for helping out on the day. Dave Lindemann was down at the beach and organized a ‘beach clean up’ where the kids were given trash bags and the person with the fullest bag was awarded a lovely pair of Ocean Minded Shoes. The great thing about this brand is that the products are made from re-cycled goods.
To Lizzard, Mentos, Bioderm, Palmers and Dept of Sport – a very big thanks. Meryl de Sousa spent the whole day on Sat sorting out prizes and Meryl also came to the beach early on Sunday, and back again at lunch time on Sunday to help with prize giving!
Tim Hordyk is our new Equipment Manager and did an excellent job of it on Sunday. Unfortunately the electricity box on Durban beach has been vandalized so there was no power for the music / PA – but I am sure they will fix that. Thanks Tim for being there early, and being the last to leave and packing up etc. Sue & Kevin Rodgers for helping early in the morning, and Andy, Paul, Rocky, Dave, Dean and others for your help at the end.
Our judges Dave Dalton, Tim Lubbe, Malcolm, Elaine, Cruise & Fortune – thanks for the early and efficient start and all your hard work. Anne Wright for being a wonderful contest director/ beach marshall, Carol Brown for running a tight shop and help with prizes etc, and Annie de Vries for tabulating, beach marshall, photographing etc.
To all the rent-a-dads: Dave Lindemann, Baron Stander, Marcel Hoffman, Dean Leibbrandt, Mark Wootton, Alan Wallace, Pierre Tostee – you guys are GREAT! Thanks for surfing your hearts out all day. And some of you surfed so many heats – surprising you survived the event!
The Dads & daughters was won by Sarah & Chris Baum who really danced on those waves! They seemed to have full control at all times and just like turning a switch decided which direction to go in.
Alan Wallace and Mia did an excellent move where Mia jumped onto Alan’s board and surfed all the way to shore on one board. There was such control that Alan was able to pick up Mia’s trailing board and carry it all the way into shore. The crowd were enthralled with this display. Alan continued the show with his own kids Nathan and Keagan in other heats.
Nikita Kekana and Dave Lindemann also surfed up a storm and opted to go in different directions on the same wave (different peaks) which saw them surf their way into finals.
Kane and Paul Bennewith took top honours in the Dads & Lads section. Paul was like a kid with a new toy. He was just so happy with the event and loved surfing with his son. Bryce and Mike Burness were a very close second followed by Mike Varikas and Matt and then Oscar and Mark Wootton.
Dean Leibbrandt was on top form and won the Masters division and came 3rd in the points combined division.
Well done to EVERYONE who took part! You are ALL winners!
