RECORD ENTRIES FOR NORTHSWELL SURF CONTEST
Over seventy surfers from as young as eleven to the masters division entered into the third Northswell surf contest of 2009 at Dairy Beach on Sunday. This is nearly 25% more than entered into the first event in February this year.
Competitors and spectators were treated to the magical May Durban weather – warm and sunny. However the waves were tricky in the morning – what surfers call ‘morning sickness’ – when the ocean is still trying to recover from the strong onshore messy conditions from the day before – but then it cleans up as the day moves on.
For the finals in the afternoon conditions changed to a perfect A frame at Dairy where the pushing tide became 3 ft and super rippable as it turned slight South East onshore. Surfers could chose to go left or right.
Ryan Logie was on top form in the Masters division and scored a 7.5 wave, beating Dave Linderman into second place. Dean Leibbrand placed third and Chris Baum fourth.
Thirteen surfers took part in the open mens division and WQS campaigners Rudy Palmboom Jnr, and Brandon Jackson placed first and second respectively. Mark Shepperson from Umdloti landed a huge 360 air which scored him an 8 point ride, but he unfortunately his back up ride was not enough to take him out of thirdplace. Wavehouse master - Rob Whyte placed fourth.
The highly competative u20 boys division saw goofy footer Devin Lane unbeatable on his backhand. Beyrick de Vries placed second, Scott Lefevre third and Chris Leppan fourth.
David Van Zyl continued his winning streak by claiming a clean victory again. This is the second contest in the series that he has won. Fast improving Jake Stewart took second place and only half a point divided Chris Frolich and Kane Bennewith from third and fourth place.
Girl surfing is becoming more popular in Durban and Northswell organizers split the age divisions for the first time to give the younger girls a chance. IN the u16 girls division Heather Klug was winning from the start, but then Nikita Kekana impressed the judges with her vertical back hand turn which earned her a 6.5 score in the dying stages of the heat. This put her in first, Heather in second, Caryn MacNicol in third, Jess Wilson fourth and young Teal Hogg placed fifth.
Tarryn Chudleigh from Cape Town was narrowly beaten by less than a point by local surfer Sarah Baum. Both girls worked hard and had high scoring rides. Heidi Palmboom battled to find the waves and placed third followed by top seed Kat Steffen.
Ted McCArthy is the event organizer and said “I want to thank Lizzard, Quiksilver, Roxy, Volcom, Fox and Ocean Minded for their fantastic prizes they donated. Also want to thank KZN Surfing Association Charles Lefever and Julie for their help. Today was a really successful day and we are stoked to have so many surfers taking part”.
Thanks too - to Clover Dairies who sponsored the delicious Super M drinks for all the entrants and staff and parents!
The next Northswell surf comp will be taking place on Sunday 28 June at Dairy.
