THE HURLEY TIMES SOUTH AFRICA
Wednesday, June 2 2010

It's the morning of the finals
Hello again to one and all. We hope that the new fortnightly outing of the Hurley Times South Africa finds you well, and, if you're on the coast, you scored from the excellent conditions that the final week of May served up. There's been quite a lot happening on the Hurley front as of late,  as we see in the final round of our Win A Trip to California competition, with the Top Ten entrants selected! Scroll on, dear readers...

THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES

1. Hurley's Win A Trip Top Ten decided
The Top 10 are in! As promised, the top 5 voted entrants and those deemed the five most creative (read: crazy) have qualified for the Final Round, and one of them will be in California in a couple months - on Hurley's dime, of course. It's a good mix of entrants and we're confident these madcats will have some good things in store for us as they come up with new profiles to get as many votes as they can over the next two weeks. Because hey, if they don't, the only trip they'll be going on is the 'I Wish I Had A Better Profile for the Final Round' Trip(tm).

2. Hurley's Mike Frew on hand for Wave Wizards revival
Long-standing KZN surfing institution Wave Wizards has been pulled out of near-total stagnation recently thanks to the concerted efforts of dedicated locals and awesome sponsorship (*cought cough* Hurley) - all members got an exclusive Hurley One & Only Wave Wizards. Our boy Mike Frew was on hand for the revival, and Ridge magazine ran a cool article complete with a shot of Mr Frew (that's him there between the Hurley banners). Umhlanga rocks. Heh, see what we did there?

3. Oops, he did it again
Hurley's favourite waiter/surfer has impressed all once again with his blowing up on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula. Check out Josh going bananas above and below the lip at Kalk Bay in this video on The Bomb Surf website. The way he's going he might win this year's coveted Hurley Slashie award, for being the year's best best surfer-slash-waiter, "and not the other way around."

 4. Timmy Curran still making movies; still rippin'
The no-longer-a-grom Mr Tim Curran, one of the most exciting surfers of the 90's, is still killing it on the freesurfing scene, and his new movie The Union Express documents just what this Ventura, California stalwart has been up to. Clue: he's been absolutely ripping with his regular crew, and also been recording some awesome tunes of his own. You can check it all out yourself, as The Union Express is now available at your local surf shop. And it's awesome. That's some unbiased journalism right there, folks.

5. Skull Candy rollin' with the Hurleys
Some big news on the international front is that Hurley have hooked up with audio headgear crew Skull Candy to bring their pumpin' audioware to Hurley teamriders. The bad news is that Josh Salie was cruising the Muizenberg strip wearing his new Skull Candy headphones and was pulled over by the cops - they mistook him for Snoop Dogg. All good, though, as the incident was cleared up with a complex handshake and an 'unoffical' Skull Candy headgear donation.

6. Shop of the Week: Natural Energy, Strand
Strand's Natural Energy is owned and run by a family of surfers – Shane and Taryn Pratt along with their sista surfer Penny Robarts (the 5 month pregnant chick you still see ripping it up at the Strand). We're digging the shop because not only are they running a pretty core shop, but it's also becoming a local hangout for the Strand groms. And we like the youth, you know. "The best part of our jobs is doing market research... you gotta surf with the locals to know what they want!” says Shane. It is directly across from the local surf spot, the Pipe, which makes their job all the easier. Rock on Boland!
You can contact them by email or call the shop on 021 853 1151 or dial their surf report on 021 853 1150

7. Sales conference jamboree
The Hurley headquarters office has been buzzing the last few days with our sales conference. What a wonderful time we had, with almost everyone sick with flu. Joburg rep Dustin went out until 4am doing 'market research' that included dining on burgers, tequilas, sugar shots as well as &Union beers at Royales. This is Hurley, living the high life. Check bunny-ears Mike Frew at front middle in the pic - that guy gets around huh? Oh, and some sales related stuff happened.

That’s it for this week. And remember: big words are totally rad.
