Quiksilver Future Stars Event Set For Durban Beachfront

Durban - Quiksilver South Africa is proud to present the Quiksilver Future Stars, a surf event to be run in conjunction with the Quiksilver Pro Junior and Quiksilver King Of The Groms. The Quiksilver Future Stars event will comprise of eight invited surfers who will battle it out for a wildcard slot into the Quiksilver Pro Junior main event. These eight surfers who have been selected to participate in the Future Stars event have all come through the Surfing South Africa transformation program.

The invited surfers are: Bertie Stuurman, Dominic Abersalie, Papi Makinyane, Brandon Benjamin, Bright Ntuli, Khaya Ncgobo, Siyabonga Khoza and Fika Ngubane. According to SSA General Manager Robin De Kock, all eight have an abundant of talent and determination.

“This group have all come through the Surfing South Africa transformation program,” said De Kock. “They have already represented their respective provinces at national level and have already started to make their mark. All they really need is the opportunity to showcase their talent at the highest level, which is why Surfing South Africa is so grateful to Quiksilver for giving them this platform. The fact that the winner gets a wildcard into the main event, with all the other finalists earning a spot in Round One is an added bonus.”

Last year Dominic Abersalie of Jeffrey’s Bay took advantage of his inclusion in the future stars to make his way into the quarter finals of the Quiksilver Pro Junior. Abersalie and fellow Jeffrey’s Bay local Bertie Stuurman are the more experienced of the group of eight which in includes Muizenberg surfer Papi Makinyane who was the recent recipient of an International Surfing Association (ISA) surfing scholarship, Brandon Benjamin of Retreat, Bright Ntuli and Khayahihle Ncgobo of Umzumbe Surf Club and Durban boys Fika Ngubane and Siyabonga Khoza.  

Quiksilver South Africa Marketing Manager Dane Patterson is excited about the third rendition of this event. “We are very pleased to be staging the Future Stars again this year,” said Patterson from the event site in Durban. “I think it is great that these emerging surfers get the opportunity to be a part of an event of this magnitude. This division was introduced to showcase the development that Surfing South Africa has made in the transformation of surfing and Quiksilver is proud to be able to assist in conveying that message.”

All eight invites will receive a product package from Quiksilver and their travel costs, accommodation and meals for their four days in Durban will be sorted out on behalf of Quiksilver.

The Quiksilver Future Stars event will take place at North Beach in Durban on Friday 2 April. The Quiksilver Future Stars, along with the Quiksilver Pro Junior and the Quiksilver King Of The Groms is brought to you by Durban and Resolution. Other sponsors include Supersport and Red Bull. ASP Africa sanctions the Pro Junior division and SSA sanctions the Quiksilver King Of The Groms and the Quiksilver Future Stars.
