Day-Three Of The Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior Sees Action Aplenty In Big Waves
Gold Coast Queensland, Wednesday 3rd February 2010: THE opening rounds of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2010 Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior saw the best international junior surfers in the world tackling solid 1.5-2m waves today on Queensland’s (Australia) South Stradbroke Island.
After the start of competition was delayed for the first two days of the event’s waiting period, competitors were itching to surf and their performances reflected their enthusiasm.
Impressing in the early rounds was American star Nat Young, with the California (Santa Cruz) kid posting one of the day’s highest heat scores registering a combined two wave total of 13.75 (out of a possible 20).
The stylish goofy-footer (right foot forward stance) looked right at home in the heavy conditions locking in an 8.50 ride (out of a possible 10), backed up with a 5.25 to dispose of Chad Du Toit (South Africa), Dale Staples (South Africa) and Jackson O’Donnell (New South Wales, Australia).
The juniors today created history, being the first surfers to compete in a professional event at the world-renowned beach break of South Stradbroke Island.
Conditions are expected to continue to improve as the competition prepares to enter its final two days with favourable winds and consistent swell expected to maintain tomorrow and the next day.
Tomorrow will also see the entrance of the event’s top seeds into the competition, with current ASP Australasia Junior Men’s heavyweights including ratings leader Mitch Crews (Currumbin, QLD), Davey Cathels (Narrabeen, NSW), Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW), Chris Friend (Alex Headland, QLD) and Blake Ainsworth (Coolangatta, QLD) among the favourites to capture the overall win.
Being run similar to an elite ASP World Tour competition, the Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior is based around a unique ‘island format,’ with the competition designed to give competitors optimal surfing conditions throughout the event’s duration.
The Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior is proudly supported by Couran Cove Island Resort, ASP Australasia, Red Bull, Australia’s Surfing Life Magazine, Sea FM and Surfing Queensland.
