Boardriders TV Times Dec Print

Episode 23 of Boardriders TV delves into the heart and soul of surfing with an in depth look at the 7 Mile Miracle the stretch of Hawaii’s North Shore that is the home of wave after world famous wave.

Living legend Tamayo Perry acts as our guide through this mythic region. Hawaii has always been known as the proving ground, the place to go to make a name for yourself, no matter where you’re from or what sort of surfer you want to be known for. It was here that big wave surfing was pioneered in the 60’s, barrel riding re-defined in the 70’s and the spirit of surf culture established. Big airs, growling barrels and gauging turns that rip the wave apart set the bar almost impossibly high. The waves have no mercy and the locals won’t tolerate disrespect. If you can’t take off late and risk everything don’t even bother paddling out.

Local surfers like Davey Weare, Andy Marr, Richie Sills, Dan Redman and Jason Ribbink have spent enough time there to build up a solid reputation, with younger guys like Brandon Jackson and Chad Du Toit representing for the next generation, getting as much water time as possible.

From one island to another but this time for a different sort of proving ground. As the winter snow becomes less reliable and the glaciers recede, the Quiksilver Europe snowboard team has wondered further afield in search of new powder. Japan has become a favourite stop and it snowed pretty much every day of the trip. Bonus. The team spent almost all of their time riding backcountry and doing tree runs, one of the most dangerous types of snowboarding and potentially fatal. Injuries during tree runs cause more fatalities than avalanches. These guys make it look effortless. Fredrik Austbo, Hampus Mosesson, Jakob Wilhelmson and others explore a couple of spots, including the world famous Strawberry Fields.
