JUNIOR A TEAM TO SA CHAMPS Print
CHEMSPEC KZN JUNIOR SURFING TEAM READY TO ROCK AND ROLL!

Please can all KZN Surfers and parents come down to St Mikes over the weekend (4th and 5th October) to cheer on our team - bring your kids and wear your new jackets - KZN will have a special gazebo there and we welcome all your support!

See below:

The 2008 Reef SA National Jnr Surfing Champs presented by Ocean & Earth SA get underway at St Mikes on Wed Oct 1st when nine teams of 21 surfers representing various  provinces and totaling over 200 surfers -  will participate in the 13th edition of this premier Surfing South Africa tournament.

The Chempsec KZN Junior Surfing Team have been hard at work doing many training sessions with coach Mike Varikas. This has included weekends away to St Mikes to have time in the water where the contest is to be held. It was all smiles recently when all the surfers received their team kit from sponsors MAUI & SONS.  The surfers all look dynamic in their black and white and are more than prepared and focused on bringing back the coveted ‘Freedom Cup’ which is awarded to the team that accumulates the most points overall during the tournament.

The Chemspec KZN Jnr Team have four National Surfers taking part.  Chad du Toit, Beyrick de Vries and Sarah Baum all received their National colours and represented South Africa in France earlier this year, while Haydn MacNicol represented South Africa last year.

The KZN Team is considered by many -  to be the most prestigious team and  most difficult team to qualify for, and the surfers that make up the team come from various areas of our coastline.  Scottburgh surfers include Haydn and Caryn MacNicol, Slade Prestwich and Jason Harris.  Warner Beach surfer Mikey Venter unfortunately broke his arm so badly that he will have to be cheerleading from the sidelines.

Athlone Park surfers Josh Smit and Sarah Baum join Heidi Palmboom who hails from the Bluff.  Three DHS boys make up the team and include Chad du Toit, Scott Lefevre and David Van Zyl.  Other surfers from Durban Central Berea area are Kirsty Delport, Nikita Kekana (Durban Girls College), and Kyle Emde from Embury College.  Matt Pallet, Beyrick de Vries, Devin Lane, Shane Sykes and  Dominic Mvikweni are from North of the Umgeni and Louis Hansmeyer is from very far North – Zululand!

Only one surfer from the highway area is Shawn Dennis who lives in Westville and who has just gained a lot of experience while traveling the world for some international surfing contests.  Charles Lefevre who is the team manager said “We have a group of highly talented surfers who are all in prime condition to take on the surfers from the rest of South Africa.  We are all very proud to wear our KZN colours and have full intentions of bringing back the Freedom Cup”.

We welcome support for  our local team and encourage  visitors to picnic at St Mikes over the weekend  and cheer them on.  Results will be posted on the website www.durbansurfing.co.za daily.
