Women's Day surfing event

Women’s Day surfing event

Women and girl surfers of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in a fun surfing event at New Pier on 9 August, our national Women’s Day.

“Novice surfers aged14 years and younger who have never represented a province are especially encouraged to enter. We want to get more girls involved with this awesome sport,” said Anne Wright, the contest director and vice-chairperson of KZN Central Surfriders’ Association (KZNCSA).

Aside from the novices, there are also U16, U20 and Open divisions as well as longboarding.

There will be cash prizes for all divisions as well as lucky prizes.

The event is organised by Surfing South Africa with simultaneous events in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

As always, there is rivalry between KZN, the Eastern Cape the Western Cape about which province can attract the most entries. Last year, which was the inaugural event, the Durban event had double the entries of the other provinces.

“Surfing SA has recognised that there aren’t enough girls’ surfing contests, so they have brought in this annual event,” said Wright.

“Last year, it was held in Umhlanga in September because of the sardines but this year we have brought it back to the Durban beachfront, which has great waves to suit all surfers.”

Girls should enter via the SSA website, www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za and longboarders should sms their entries to 0823376224. Novices pay R30 entry fee while the other divisions cost R50 to enter and this can be paid at the beach.
