Welcome to 2012
First of all – A belated “Compliments of the Season” to all of you. I trust that you are well rested after your summer holidays and are back in the swing of things and toiling at the grind stone.
Well we will kick off 2012 with a bit of a bang with lots happening in the first quarter.
We have the Grom Games in Port Elizabeth to get ready for and the Reunion event with the Quadrangular happening at East London with our KZNCSA JUNIOR SQUAD competing in quite a few events for 2012. So at the SA Junior Champs time I think we will have a well oiled contest machine and a team that will do well.
KZNCSA will be hosting the SA Masters Championships in Durban in July and it should be a cracker.
This year our subs and entries will once again be paid on line via the Mr Price Heroes system. The contest fee and subs will be the same as 2011 with no change.
Notice of our AGM will be going out shortly and you will find the Calendar up for your perusal on the web page www.durbansurfing.co.za – please ensure that all your details are updated on our button that says “join our mailing list” – this will ensure that you are kept well informed of all notices sent via our mailing system
We look forward to seeing you at the first Junior trial at month end.

SA Junior Champs press release 28 Sept 2011 |
|
PRESS RELEASE 28 September 2011
Junior surfers welcome the return of SA Junior Champs Durban’s historic New Pier Durban’s historic New Pier will be the venue for the upcoming Hurley SA Junior Champs presented by Durban, the fourth time in 15 years that the tournament will take place at what is arguably the epicentre of surfing in South Africa. The Surfing South Africa premier event will see 150 of South Africa’s best junior surfers vying for national honours as well as provincial team and individual titles in the Under 13, U15 and U17 Boys and Girls age divisions.
New Pier in Durban has over the last few decades hosted its fair share of surf contests in epic conditions, and it has also been a breeding ground for some of South Africa’s most successful surfers on the international stage. When the weeklong SA Junior Champs kicks off between 4th-9th October, the next generation of South African surfers will be looking to stamp their authority at one of South Africa’s most popular and iconic surf spots.
Of the nine teams that will be represented at the Hurley SA Junior Champs presented by Durban (KZN Central, Western Province, Eastern Province, Border, Southern KZN, Boland, Zululand, Southern Cape, and a South African Development team), hosts KZN Central will be looking to make the home ground advantage work in their favour. Having won eight consecutive team titles between 1996 (when Durban hosted the first SA Junior Championships) and 2003, the team from KZN Central will be working hard to ensure that history repeats itself. Western Province, current holders of the team title, will once again be fielding a strong team and are unlikely to surrender the title without a fight.
Standouts from the 2010 edition of the SA Junior Champs who will be competing this year include Sarah Baum (KZN Central), Chanelle Botha (Southern KZN), Gina and Emma Smith (Eastern Province) and Jordy Maree (Western Province). Other names to watch out for include Steven Sawyer (Eastern Province), Brandon Benjamin (Western Province), Benji Brand and Max Armstrong (both Western Province),
Adin Masencamp (Boland) and Donavan Wichmann (Western Province). Also on the line for Under 17 Boys and U17 Girls competitors, as well as U15 Boys surfers, is the chance to earn national honours as winners in each of these three divisions will be crowned 2011 South African Champions in their respective age groups. The chance to be awarded national colours, and the associated honour of receive green national team blazers and national colours, will no doubt add much significance to what is already considered the most important junior event on the Surfing South Africa calendar. The winners of these three divisions will each receive their blazers and national colours at an award ceremony scheduled to take place at the event on completion of the last Final (Sunday, 9th October).
Robin de Kock, General Manager of Surfing South Africa, said that “not only does this event showcase the talents of the country’s best junior surfers between the ages of 10-17, but it also prepares them for the next step up. This is where champions are spotted and where their talents are developed, and we are stoked that Hurley SA and Durban have come on board as sponsors as they are focussed squarely on supporting and developing South African junior surfing”.
According to Hurley SA Marketing Manager Liam Wood, “by throwing our support behind and aligning with one of Surfing South Africa’s premier junior events, we hope to be able to have a positive impact upon junior surfing in South Africa. By inspiring South Africa’s future champions, we will not only position the Hurley brand favourably, but also contribute to South Africa’s reputation as a proud surfing nation”.
Also up for grabs at the SA Junior Champs will be the Freedom Cup, which will be won by the team who collectively accumulate the most points over the course of the entire event. For the first time event, this year’s Hurley SA Junior Champs presented by Durban will also feature two new exciting elements, namely the Red Bull Air Show and the Tag Team contest between the participating teams.
For more information about the Hurley SA Junior Champs presented by Durban, visit www.hurley.co.za , ‘Like’ Hurley South Africa on Facebook or follow HurleyZA on Twitter. Daily results and photos will also be posted on www.hurley.co.za and www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za . Supporting sponsors are Skullcandy, Red Bull, Red Bull Mobile, Southern Sun North Beach, Container Conversions and Zigzag. The event also has the support of Sport and Recreation South Africa and the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund. The event is organised by Nerve Events and the host province is the KZN Central Surfriders Association. |

The names of those surfers and officials selected for the 2011 SA Development Team are attached. HURLEY CLEAN WATER INITIATIVE
Hurley and SSA have declared the contest area a “plastic bottle free zone”. We urge everyone NOT to buy water in plastic bottles which not only cost approximately R6 per bottle but are a scourge on the beaches of South Africa Instead we ask that everyone purchases the unique Hurley reusable bottle for R35. Owners of the Hurley bottle will be able to fill the bottle as often as required at the Hurley water filters provided in the contest area at no cost at all. Funds raised from each bottle purchased will be used to buy water filters for identified disadvantaged areas along the KZN coastline. These filters will be provided by Hurley. The more support received and the more bottles purchased the more water filters will be provided to these disadvantaged areas. · More specific details of this inspiring initiative will be outlined at the Opening Function. |

Update on Natal Champs 2011 |
|
Natal Champs Junior 2011
KZNCSA hosted the Natal Junior Champs at New Pier on Saturday and Sunday 17th& 18th September respectively.
KZNCSA fielded an A and B team to compete against SKZN and an Independent team with few members representing Zululand. The event was held in tricky conditions on day one due to a strong onshore wind with 3ft-5ft waves making it a multiple line up at New Pier. However day two greeted us with favourable weather and a gentle onshore which improved the conditions all day. With over 90 competitors competing in this event this was a perfect warm up opportunity for the region prior to the South African Junior Champs which will be held at New Pier in a fortnight.
The event was held with a true spirit of comradely amongst all competitors and spectators alike. Competitors gave there all to lift Natal titles for 2011. "I think this is an important opportunity to provide a platform for surfers who are on the fringe of representing their respective regions at SA Champs and a key motivator for all our kids coming through our development program. This platform enables our region to access these kids in a competitive environment and nurture the prospective talent. The evidence of our development in the region is starting to show and the results speak for themselves". Said Brendan Callaghan president of the KZNCSA region.
So who stood out and made and made the lasting impressions of the contest? Well it was the two younger divisions who walked off with the spoils. Chanelle Botha(SKZN) U 15 won the award for outstanding girl surfer and R500.00 in her pocket. Not to be outdone was none other than Koby Oberholzer (KZNCSA A) in U 13 division respectively. The other stand out and Mr consistent was none other than Wade Simkiss however we felt Koby lifted the honours for R500.00.
Natal Champions for 2011 were Cana Foster (KZNCSA A) U13 girls, Koby Oberholzer(KZNCSA A) U13 boys, Chanelle Botha (SKZN)U15 Girls, Dylan Gouws(SKZN) U15 boys, Caryn Mc Nicol(KZNCSA A) U17 girls, Wade Simkiss (KZNCSA B) U17 Boys. Results: U13 Girls 4. Snthlandla Makhubu(Ind) 3. Gaby Lalivaux(KZNCSA B) 2. Sophie Bell(KZNCSA A) 1. Cana Foster(KZNCSA A) U13 Boys 4. Keegan Wallace(KZNCSA) 3. Nthambo Msibi (Ind) 2. SSA and KZNCSA Officials
Dear parents and competitors,
On behalf of the KZNCSA Executive I would like to bring to your attention that we have had a few incidents raising their heads that do not conform to the SSA Surfing Rule Book. I can categorically state that any future breaches of the rule book will not be tolerated by KZNCSA or its Executives. These rules are used and are the only set of rules we abide by, not ASP or any other Rules, but those of Surfing South Africa Rule Book. This rule book can be downloaded from the SSA web site or you may mail me directly and I will forward you a copy.
Therein is a complete set of rules and guidelines and dealing with the consequences of any offences committed. I cannot have any member or parent abusing or threatening any official and this will result in a fine of R2000.00 for such transgression.
We as KZNCSA are also bound to ensure the correct practices are carried out with accordance to the SSA Rule Book. Our competitors are bound by the SSA Code of Conduct as is every participating member. I request that you as parents and competitors familiarise yourself with this rule book and empower yourself with the knowledge to handle any situation that may arise and follow the correct protocol. When in doubt ask to peruse the Rule Book which will be available at any contest. With sound knowledge we can avoid future transgressions.
Yours in surfing
Brendan Callaghan
KZNCSA President |

On a sad note, our former KZNCSA President, Mr Clive Mundow, recently passed away after a long illness. He was a wonderful man with loads of patience who made such a difference to the KZN dynamics. He will be missed by all of us. Our condolences are with his family at this time and we wish them all the strength to get through this difficult time.
The funeral will be held at the Catholic church in Kloof (Old Main Road) this Saturday at 11am for anyone who would like to attend.
Regards
